L’amour ou le néant

1 Sep

The 50% of Ace of Base is back and it consists of the 100% of its masculine original line-up. Yes, that’s right, AOB is making its comeback and their most distinctive trait -their unforgettable vocalists- is no longer one of the ingredients. Still, the new members’ voices are well hidden beneath layers of well-produced electro-pop.

These guys spoiled us during the 90′s and it seems they’ll be keeping up with the tradition.

You’re all around, in control…

Rosanna Munter is a former member of the girl-band PLAY. You might remember them, they had a mild success in 2001 when bubblegum pop was super in and Britney was the apparent incarnation of all good things.

Here’s her first solo single, Waterfall. It’s terrific and that’s not a word I use often. It’s mystical and very zen-ish at the same time. Enjoy yourself.

Turn on the speakers, let happiness flow

It’s the perfect day for some happy-go-lucky bubblegum electro. It’s time for two feel-good tracks with that Friday vibe written all across. Beware, these tunes are coated with an extra dose of glazing… Give into temptation; we all need some sugar every now and then:

Piña Colada Boy -by Swedish Dance trio Baby Alice- reminds me of Barbie Girl by Aqua infused with some Latin flavor à la Isla Bonita. I’m talking about a massive everyone-to-the-dance floor tune. Piña Colada Boy was written in 2008 and finally remixed and released this month.

RedOne has been putting together Love Generation, a Swedish girl group that will serve as a vehicle for some of his songs. Their first single -which holds the same name as the band- is pretty different to other RedOne productions. The result is an ultra catchy and joyful song that explores a new sonic territory for the Moroccan/Swedish DJ. I have a hunch that the group won’t see the light of day but the track will surely make a great addition for your iPod.

“A Perfect Match” by A-Teens

19 Aug

Two teenagers profess their love for each other. One spends her “money on diamonds and pearls”, the other would sell his car just to travel the world. Oh, how lovely to see opposites attract. Isn’t this song an allegory of the Ying and Yang? Or is it a philosophical digression about duality? Why not a manifesto about the magnetism of unresolved patterns? Why not all three of them? All three of them

“Into the Clouds” by The Sound of Arrows

12 Aug

“Into the Clouds” by The Sound of Arrows is probably the best Swedish export since ABBA. The song brings the word ‘epic’ to a whole new level as the duo creates an ethereal landscape inspired by the fjords of their hometown Gävle -deemed one of Scandinavia’s most boring places-.

“Into the Clouds” is a dreamy voyage. The Enya-influenced track evokes luscious imagery amped by its video, which finds the band opening a Pandora box. This time around, the container unleashes all virtues –instead of all mankind evils–.

The single is scheduled for a late September release. Check it out: it’s definitely one of 2009’s best efforts.
